Last year, you could buy one of 24,154 'standard' foreign motorcycles, one of 29,168 'performance' foreign motorcycles, one of 33,199 'touring' foreign motorcycles, or one of 68,964 'custom' foreign motorcycles.
Or, you could buy a Harley. Your Harley. And, after adding some accessories, ride it home knowing there is not another one like it.
At Harley-Davidson, we don't build something new for the sole purpose of selling something new. We don't try to please all the people all the time. We're content with pleasing just some of the people all of the time. People looking for something special.
For example, last year we introduced the XLH Sportster 1100. It was the biggest Sportster we've ever built. And considering how fast they sold, it could be our best.
The number that brought this Sportster its quick popularity is 1100, the displacement of the V² Evolution engine. Its 10% boost in horsepower and torque over earlier Sportster engines was the first thing people noticed, and they noticed fast.
The 1100 takes another step forward this year. New, low-pressure, die-cast cylinder heads have a cleaner look, and improved combustion chamber, muffler and ignition advance system designs add a 5% power boost. We also tweaked the transmission with a new, close-ratio gear box for smoother gear transition. We replaced the front fender with a sportier version. And we added 7-spoke cast aluminium wheels for less unsprung weight.
Of course, custom styling is standard - peanut tank, shorty duals, stepped seat, buckhorn bars, painted cylinders and heads with polished fins, and directly above the halogen lamp, a tach and speedometer. For all those classic Harley-Davidson features, you still won't see as many Sportster 1100s on the asphalt this year as you will foreign motorcycles.
But that's the way we like it. And for many motorcyclists, it's reason enough to buy a Harley-Davidson.
